ASTM D4898 Insoluble Contamination of Hydraulic Fluids by Gravimetric Analysis
Hydraulically operated machinery depends upon hydraulic fluids to convey power and lubricate and protect machinery components from wear and thermal damage. These systems contain pumps, valves, seals and precise moving parts that are prone to damage from solid particulates that may be present in the fluid. This test determines the mass of solid particles in hydraulic fluids.
A homogenous aliquot of the sample is filtered through a membrane filter. The filter is rinsed with solvent to remove any sample oil, leaving only the solid particles that were present in the original sample. The mass of these solid particles is reported.
