ASTM D1401 Water Separability of petroleum Oils and Synthetic Fluids

This method measures the ability of oil and water to separate.  40 ml of oil and 40 ml of water are mixed at test temperature and separation in ml is observed at 5 minute intervals until the emulsion reduces to 3 ml or less. Oils with viscosity at 40°C from 28.8 to 90 cSt. are tested at 54°C.  Oils with viscosity at 40°C greater than 90 cSt. are tested at 82°C. A completely different method ASTM D2711 is available for medium to high viscosity oils which employs more vigorous mixing.
